Why Sicily [link] ? Why a move from the Arafura to the Mediterranean Sea?
A number of reasons. First, after 38 years of working, I had the chance to get the hell out of Australia for what I termed a “pre-pension gap year”. Second, I’ve spent time here before: two nights in early 1998 and I knew I wanted to come back; seven weeks in 2005 (which resulted in an exhibition in Darwin in 2006) and five weeks in 2007.
Home of the Mafia? The poverty-ridden, corrupt mezzogiorno that is southern Italy? The launch place of Garibaldi’s campaign to unify Italy, a region of resistance and invasion. Whatever, it’s a place I feel comfortable in.
Especially its capital, Palermo [link]. I arrived October 2013, and a month later moved into a one bedroom flat in Vicolo della Rosa Bianca, a narrow alleyway in the Vucciria [link], the oldest market place in the historical centre of Palermo.
